Our dear friend Dario Serrentino (of the fabulous winery Mortellito) grows some amazing almonds and olives, in addition to grapes. The Pizzuta di Avola variety almonds, from the Val di Notto in the southeastern tip of Sicilia, produce nuts with a delightfully crunchy snap, a silky smooth texture and a remarkably fruity finish of cherries. Yes, we said cherries. Dario also mentions there is a touch of bitterness that we find adds so much to the overall flavor.
These almonds taste familiar, but are so much more complex than those salted-to-death grocery store nuts we have all become accustomed to. Each almond is an absolutely delicious treat.
